Cosmic Microwave Background Polarisation: foreground contrast and component separation

چکیده

We evaluate the expected level of foreground contamination to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarised radiation, focusing on the diffuse emission from our own Galaxy. In particular, we perform a first attempt to simulate an all sky template of polarised emission from thermal dust. This study indicates that the foreground contamination to CMB B modes is likely to be relevant on all frequencies, and even at high Galactic latitudes. We review the recent developments in the design of data analysis techniques dedicated to the separation of CMB and foreground emissions in multi-frequency observations, exploiting their statistical independence. We argue that the high quality and detail of the present CMB observations represent an almost ideal statistical dataset where these algorithms can operate with excellent performance. We explicitly show that the recovery of CMB B modes is possible even if they are well below the foreground level, working at the arcmin. resolution at an almost null computational cost. This capability well represents the great potentiality of these new data analysis techniques, which should be seriously taken into account for implementation in present and future CMB observations.

The Galactic Dust as a Foreground to Cosmic Microwave Background Maps

We present results obtained with the PRONAOS balloon-borne experiment on interstellar dust. In particular, the submillimeter / millimeter spectral index is found to vary between roughly 1 and 2.5 on small scales (3.5′ resolution). This could have implications for component separation in Cosmic Microwave Background maps.

Diffuse source separation in CMB observations

Spectacular advances in the understanding of the Big-Bang model of cosmology have been due to increasingly accurate observations of the properties of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The detector sensitivities of modern experiments have permitted to measure fluctuations of the CMB temperature with such a sensitivity that the contamination of the data by astrophysical foreground radiations...

Extracting cosmic microwave background polarisation from satellite astrophysical maps

We present the application of the Fast Independent Component Analysis (FastICA) technique for blind component separation to polarised astrophysical emission. We study how the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarised signal, consisting of E and B modes, can be extracted from maps affected by substantial contamination from diffuse Galactic foregrounds and instrumental noise. We perform the ana...

Foreground Subtraction of Cosmic Microwave Background Maps Using Wi-fit (wavelet-based High-resolution Fitting of Internal Templates)

We present a new approach to foreground removal for CMB maps. Rather than relying on prior knowledge about the foreground components, we first extract the necessary information about them directly from the microwave sky maps by taking differences of temperature maps at different frequencies. These difference maps, which we refer to as internal templates, consist only of linear combinations of G...

Reconstruction of the CMB lensing for Planck

Aims. We prepare real-life Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing extraction with the forthcoming Planck satellite data, by studying two systematic effects related to the foregrounds contamination: the impact of foreground residuals after a component separation on the lensed CMB map, and of removing a large contaminated region of the sky. Methods. We first use the Generalized Morphological C...
